GraspOS at the Open Science FAIR 2025

26 September 2025

At the recent Open Science FAIR, GraspOS members took part in two hands-on workshops dedicated to advancing fair and responsible research assessment (RRA). These sessions brought together researchers, policymakers, librarians, and infrastructure providers to move from principles to practice, co-creating tangible tools and frameworks for an Open Science-aware future.

1. Collaborative Pathways to Responsible Research Assessment via Open Infrastructures

This workshop tackled the practical question of how to implement RRA principles using open, ethical, and sustainable infrastructures. The session focused on the Open Infrastructure Checklist, a new tool developed by the CoARA Working Group on Open Infrastructures for RRA (OI4RRA). The checklist provides actionable guidance across four key dimensions: technical strength, operational excellence, community-led governance, and ethical practices.

Participants engaged in a hands-on session, working in small groups to test the checklist's usability and adaptability. They applied it to three real-world services:

  • The GraspOS Catalogue of open data, tools, and services for RRA.
  • OpenAIRE’s Researcher Profile, a service for showcasing diverse research contributions.
  • IOI’s Infra Finder, a catalogue of open infrastructure tools and services.

Led by organisers from OpenAIRE and the CoARA working group, the workshop produced valuable outcomes, including community-refined feedback on the checklist, practical insights into the readiness of these infrastructures, and a collaborative discussion on strategies for broader adoption of RRA.

2. Designing What Matters: Co-Creating Open Science Dashboards

This co-creation workshop focused on rethinking how to monitor and reward Open Science in ways that are meaningful to researchers, institutions, and funders. The session challenged participants to move beyond simple scores and explore how storytelling can drive meaningful change in research assessment.

Attendees, including policymakers and research support professionals, worked in groups to design their own Open Science dashboards. Using a curated set of indicators from the PathOS and GraspOS projects, each group crafted a visual prototype on a poster tailored to a specific stakeholder, such as an individual researcher or a funder. The activity prompted deep reflection on what to measure, what data is needed, and how the results could be used in decision-making.

The workshop successfully generated concrete prototypes that can inform the future development of the GraspOS Researcher Profile and Monitors, contributing to the creation of more meaningful tools for evaluating Open Science impact.
