Dr Elizabeth Gadd

Dr Elizabeth (Lizzie) Gadd is Head of Research Culture & Assessment at Loughborough University. She chairs the International Network Of Research Management Societies (INORMS) Research Evaluation Group and is a Vice Chair of the Coalition on Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA). She co-authored the UKRI-commissioned report, 'Harnessing the Metric Tide: Indicators, Infrastructures & Priorities for UK Research Assessment' and was the recipient of the 2020 INORMS Award for Excellence in Research Management and Leadership & the 2025 ARMA Award for Advocacy in Research Management.

Should we be assessing openness openly or at all?

The proliferation of narrow publication-based assessments has been a major sticking point in the drive towards greater engagement with open science practices. As a consequence, many of the calls to reform research assessment have their roots in the open science movement. However, some of the proposed approaches for reforming research assessment to enable open science may have unintended consequences. This talk will consider the most effective way of delivering fair and inclusive assessment reforms that truly incentivise engagement with open science practices.
